The South Africans fell short of their effort to qualify for the semi-finals against China on Saturday night, but then bounced back to defeat the Pacific Islanders by scoring five tries to two.

Liske Lategan, Nonthuka Shongwe, Donelle Snyders and Felicia Jacobs each scored a try, with Snyders adding two conversions to hand them a commanding 24-0 halftime lead.

Marlize de Bruin added another unconverted try to take the score to 29-0 before their opponents finished the match with two consolation tries.

Now the South Africans are aiming to finish the tournament on a positive note when they face hosts Chile for a second time in three days, hoping to repeat Friday’s 22-10 win over the South Americans.
