The home side displayed clinical finishing in the first half, which netted three deserved tries, allowing them to open up a halftime gap of 19-0 over the Kiwis.
Their powerful pack of forwards, stacked with Rugby World Cup winning Springboks, laid the foundation for a superb win, while the Hurricanes committed just too many errors to threaten the home team.
Sergeal Petersen (wing) caught a Herschel Jantjies (scrumhalf) cross-kick to dive over in the corner, and Springbok prop Steven Kitshoff powered his way over the tryline for his team's second try, while Jantjies raced away to score their third inside an impressive 30 minutes of play in the first half.
Damian Willemse (flyhalf) - another Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok - scored all the hosts’ points in the second half. He landed a penalty goal near the 60 minute mark and then raced the full length of the field to score an intercept try to the absolute delight of the home supporters.
A matter of concern for the Cape side though were the injuries suffered by Springboks, captain Siya Kolisi (flanker) and Bongi Mbonambi (hooker), who both left the field early on.
The DHL Stormers take on the Vodacom Bulls at home in their second match next weekend.
Scorers:
DHL Stormers (9) 27 – Tries: Sergeal Petersen, Steven Kitshoff, Herschel Jantjies, Damian Willemse. Conversions: Willemse (2). Penalty: Willemse.
