Mr Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, expressed his deep condolences, remembering Pitzer as a formidable presence in the Springbok pack, a respected teammate, and a beloved family man.

“Gys was an integral part of South African rugby history, playing alongside legends and contributing to memorable victories,” said Mr Alexander. “His commitment to excellence on the field was matched by his dedication off it - whether as a teacher, coach, or mentor to young players.”

Born in Louis Trichardt on 8 July 1939, Pitzer proudly represented Northern Transvaal and South Africa, playing 12 Test matches and featuring in the victorious 1968 series against the British & Irish Lions. His rugby career was cut short by injury in 1969, but his influence continued in the sport and his community.

“Beyond his achievements on the field, Gys will be remembered as a remarkable husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy is one of leadership, kindness and deep love for the game and his fellow man,” added Mr Alexander.

“Gys endured profound personal loss last year with the passing of his wife, Rina, and grandson, Gys (Jnr), in 2024. His remaining family, friends, and the rugby fraternity will deeply miss him, but his contributions will forever be honored.

“Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time. May they find strength in his memory and comfort in knowing his legacy will live on.”

SA Rugby extends heartfelt condolences to all who knew and cherished Gys Pitzer. His influence will remain a treasured part of South African rugby history.
