About

RUGBY WORLD CUP (MEN)

The Rugby World Cup is contested every four years between the top international teams. The tournament was first held in 1987, when the tournament was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. In 2019, the tournament was hosted by Japan, where the Springboks were crowned champions for the third time, and they successfully defended their title in France in 2023, becoming the first team to lift the Webb Ellis Cup four times. Rugby World Cup 2027 will take place in Australia, and the USA will play host in 2031.

The history

The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, the Rugby School pupil who, according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game. Four countries have won the trophy: South Africa (1995, 2007, 2019, 2023), New Zealand (1987, 2011, 2015), Australia (1991, 1999), and England (2003). The Springboks are the current champions, having defeated New Zealand in the final of the 2023 tournament in France. The tournament is administered by World Rugby, the sport's international governing body. Sixteen teams were invited to participate in the inaugural tournament in 1987, however since 1999, 20 teams have taken part. Australia will host in 2027.
